Pypestream Chatbot Software

About Pypestream

Pypestream was founded in New York City in 2015 by Richard Smullen, who earlier co-founded Genesis Media. Its first product, launched in beta in December 2015, was a messaging app where brands could talk with customers through a Pype, a chat interface that combined natural language understanding with tappable buttons and visual widgets. Early users included Washington Gas and Billboard, and Discovery Health in South Africa put the technology in its member app.

The company moved into enterprise automation and has been in production with large companies since 2017. Its architecture is covered by 13 issued US patents filed from 2015, and it is certified for SOC 2 and PCI DSS Level 1. Pypestream raised $15 million in 2017 and later took investment from W.R. Berkley.

The current pitch is AI agents that finish the job. A supervisor agent reads each request and passes it to an agent with the right tools, answers are drawn from the enterprise's own content, and requests are completed inside its systems. When a person is needed, they join the same chat or call with the transcript and verified identity already in hand.

Two launches in October 2026 extended that. The Engagement API, announced October 20, lets product teams build their own front end on top of Pypestream agents, and RE/MAX used it for SkyView, an assistant for more than 150,000 brokers and agents. On October 28 Pypestream said its Voice AI was generally available and live for quick service restaurant brands. The company says it has handled more than 2.5 billion interactions.
